Paul R. Williams F.A.I.A. and Associates submitted a drawing in 1960 for the planned Arroyo Motor Hotel. If accepted, their design would have been a strikingly modern addition to sedate Pasadena. [Their proposed rendering can be seen online at the Los Angeles Examiner Archive at the University of Southern California, Doheny Memorial Archive.] At a cost of $2,750,000, the project proposal for the Arroyo Motor Hotel submitted to Hawkins Petroleum, Inc. included 180 units, a private "men only" Executive Club with individual suites and a heliport (L.A.Times, December 4, 1960). The firm's proposal also featured a dramatic courtyard dominated by an elevated circular platform housing a restaurant and dining room. The developer, Hawkins Petroleum, was known for its diverse investment portfolios including oil and gas holdings, a bathroom fixture manufacturing company and photography and real estate interests. The Paul R. Williams and Associates project was not realized. The illustration presented here is a drawing of the completed Arroyo Motor Hotel that was used as their marketing piece during the 1960s.
